ActiveWatch offers you a case study on a topic that has recently been brought back to the public agenda following domestic and foreign political developments. We aimed to identify the main characteristics and manifestations of the anti-Sorosist/anti-NGO/anti-media discourse promoted in the public space in the period following the first round of the 2024 presidential elections and the Trump administration's decision to close the USAID program.
We decided to conduct this study because in recent months we have witnessed a revival of the discourse that we generically classify as "anti-Sorosist", a discourse that has as its main target human rights activists, non-governmental organizations, independent journalists, politicians, etc. The phenomenon is not new in the Romanian realm, it has also manifested itself, with different intensities and particularities, in other periods marked by social and political tensions, such as the civic protests against the Roşia Montană mining project (2013) or the protests against the Dragnea regime (2017-2018).
